Sharks Are Older Than Trees

Most people think of trees as ancient symbols of nature, but sharks are older. Fossil evidence suggests that the first sharks swam in the oceans more than 400 million years ago. Researchers believe that the first true forests appeared tens of millions of years after that.

多くの人は木を自然の古代からの象徴だと考えますが、サメのほうがさらに古い存在です。化石の証拠によると、最初のサメは4億年以上前の海を泳いでいたことがうかがえます。本当の意味での森林が現れたのは、それから数千万年後だと研究者たちは考えています。

Sharks have survived several mass extinctions, including events that wiped out most species on Earth. Their success is partly due to their bodies. A shark's skeleton is made of flexible cartilage instead of bone, and many species can detect the faint electric signals produced by nearby animals.

サメは、地球上の大半の種を絶滅させた出来事を含め、何度かの大量絶滅を生き延びてきました。その成功は、一部にはサメの体のつくりによるものです。サメの骨格は骨ではなく柔軟な軟骨でできており、多くの種は近くにいる動物が発するかすかな電気信号を感知できます。

Sadly, surviving for such a long time does not guarantee a safe future. Today, many shark species are threatened, mainly because of overfishing. A group that has endured so much now depends on human efforts to protect it.

残念ながら、そんなに長く生き延びてきたからといって、安全な未来が保証されるわけではありません。現在、多くのサメの種が、主に乱獲によって絶滅の危機にさらされています。これほど多くの困難に耐えてきた生き物が、今では人間による保護の努力に頼っているのです。
